NPAIHB’s AmeriCorps member Luca, attended a digital storytelling workshop funded through the CDC, specifically, the Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country project. The workshop was sponsored by their partners at the Alaskan Native Epidemiology Center in Anchorage, AK who graciously hosted seven tribal health workers from across Indian Country, to implement new skills involving data sharing. The CDC has been quantifying data since its inception and tribal communities understand that they need to comply with these metrics to run their programs, but experience erasure through lack of personal narratives and real experiences being accounted for. The AmeriCorps member serves to fill the gap between community members and the government systems that they act within. Through workshops like this that expand volunteers’ abilities to collect and share data, there is more visibility and anecdotal data for agencies like the CDC to analyze.
